What is the EU AI Act?

Also known as: AI Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689

The EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) is the EU law that regulates artificial intelligence by risk: it bans unacceptable-risk practices, sets strict requirements for high-risk AI systems and adds transparency duties for certain AI, including general-purpose AI models.

The AI Act entered into force on 1 August 2024 and applies in stages: the prohibitions and AI literacy duty from 2 February 2025, the rules for general-purpose AI models from 2 August 2025, and most other obligations from August 2026 onwards, with some high-risk deadlines later.

Organisations that use AI (deployers) have duties too, for example human oversight, using high-risk systems according to their instructions and informing people when they interact with AI.
